Over the weekend, news spread that Royals, William and Kate, requested that their private villa was to be stocked with Brussels sprouts because they "wanted to increase their chance of fertility". Though Brussels sprouts are packed with folic acid, we have not heard that Brussels sprouts can aid in conception, but hey you never you know... While certain foods have been said to boost fertility, we have never heard of such "superfoods" that were scientifically proven to increase the chances of getting pregnant but we do know of some "superfoods" to consume once you are already pregnant.
When you are pregnant, the thought of certain foods can trigger intense cravings while other edibles can make you nauseous just at the smell. If you can stomach it, here are some foods that have been deemed "power foods" for those who are expecting:
*Salmon- heavy in essential omega 3 fatty acid, DHA, which is said to boost your baby's brain power.
*Asparagus- it might make your urine smell strange, but Asparagus is high in folate.
* Eggs- a great source of choline, a B vitamin that boosts fetal brain and memory development for those who are suffering from "pregnancy brain"
* Yogurt- a great source of zinc and calcium.
*Cottage cheese- a great source of protein
* Oranges- because you are five times as likely to develop a serious complication of the flu or cold you want to increase your immunity via vitamin C.
*Almonds- Loaded with magnesium, fiber, vitamin E and protein.
Have a delicious day!

TGIF!!
Happy Memorial Day Weekend! A great way to enjoy the long weekend and an unofficial start to the summer season is with a good old fashioned BBQ. Sure hot dogs and hamburgers are wonderful fare, but we think it is fun to spice things up. Here are some of our favorite ways to satisfy our cravings and get your "grill on":
* Host a do-it-yourself gourmet hot dog or hamburger party. Get together a variety of ingredients such as banana peppers and onions for hot dogs or blue cheese and caramelized onions for hamburgers. Allow your guests to assemble their own dishes using a few toppings they might not have tried before.
* Corn on the cob is delicious when plain, but snazzy it up with some lime peel, melted butter, sea salt, and a dash of chili powder. Yum, yum!
*If you are serving cocktails, make yourself a delicious mocktail. We love this refreshing recipe for a non-alcoholic version of the mojito aka the "nojito".
crushed ice
8 mint leaves
3 ounces lime juice
1 1/2 ounces sugar syrup
2 ounces club soda
garnish with mint
1 Fill a pint glass 1/3 full with ice, then add mint leaves.
2 Add the lime juice and sugar syrup.
3 Lightly mash the leaves together with the liquid using a muddle stick or wooden pestle, careful not to tear the leaves.
4 Fill the glass with more ice, then add club soda.
5.Garnish with mint, serve and enjoy!

Though this weekend is often commemorated with good times and BBQ's, Memorial Day is actually a solemn occasion in which those who died in active military service are remembered. To those who have lost loved ones or have active family members or friends fighting overseas right now, our thoughts are with you.
We encourage everyone to take some time to honor our military heroes by thanking a veteran or contributing to any of the non-profit organizations who are support to the injured, critically ill members of the Armed Forces and their families.

TGI(almost)F!
Memorial Day weekend is sure to bring some outdoor time and perhaps a few BBQ's. If you are planning on being outdoors for an extended amount of time, be conscious of hydrating yourself frequently. Water is obviously a good bet but there are wonderful ways to make your water a little more tasty so that perhaps you will be encouraged to drink more. Here are a few of our favorite ways to infuse water and make "agua frescas" :
*Cut up a cucumber into thin slices and add them to a pitcher of water with a splash of lemon. Can you say refreshing?
*Slice up some oranges, lemons and mint leaves for a stellar combo
*Add herbs like mint and Rosemary purée
*Purée fruits like watermelon, add a tablespoon of sugar for sweetness if needed, add water
*Tip: be sure to allow your infused water to refrigerate for at least 2 hours so that the flavors will have time to flourish.
From herbs to a sangria styled "agua fresca" to even sliced veggies, adding hints of flavor to water will make for a refreshing and delicious drink that is perfect for hot summer days!
Have a great Thursday!

Wear it Wednesday!
Memorial Day weekend signifies that summer is almost here! Hooray! Time for ice cream, swimming, and maxi dresses! We love maxi dresses for pregnant women because the look great on the pregnant body and feel comfortable too. However, there are a few things to consider when buying a maxi dress.
* Choose a light and airy fabric rather than a heavy or thick jersey. Sitting in the hot sun will make you extremely warm with all that fabric, so look for lighter weight fabrics such as cotton or a light modal.
* Some women would prefer to buy non-maternity clothing for the majority of their wardrobe if they can. We warn you, however, that doing this when purchasing dresses is a no-no if you are well into your pregnancy. The reason is that your belly lifts the dress length up several inches making the overall look of the dress appear uneven. If you are worried about spending too much, look out for killer deals like the ones we have going on right now on Target.com. All of our dresses are selling for under $35!
*Try to avoid maxi dresses with tiers that go across your belly. This will make your belly appear larger. Rather, look for a dress that either has no tiers or a few longer tiers to give that belly some room!
* Consider the size of the straps on the dress. If you are nursing or wearing thicker bras, consider a maxi that has wider straps or a flutter sleeve so that you do not have to wear layers under your dress. When the weather is warm, it is best to stay cool and not over dress so you will not get over heat.
Have a great day!

Tips Tuesday!
The summer time brings a strange batch of mixed emotions for a lot of pregnant women. Normally during the summer one is preparing to "get in shape" for that "bikini" bod, but this summer, if you are pregnant you should be concentrating on staying healthy. Don't worry, you will look fab in your bathing suit or bikini nonetheless, but right now, is not the time to diet. In fact, most nutritionists recommend that pregnant women consume 300 extra calories a day. Obviously a candy bar here and there is no biggie, but when deciding how to use those calories it is best to think of foods that are delicious and nutritious. Here are some of our favorite snacks that are healthy and scrumptious:
* Fresh fruit. If you want to make something extra special make your own frozen treats using a little fruit juice and some pureed fruit.
*Compact snacks like carrots and hummus or some baked t0rtilla chips with salsa (here it is about portion control.
*Crackers and cheese. Some brands even sell low fat varieties or low carb crackers so be on the look out for those.
*Nuts. They are wonderful if you are craving salty food and have a generous portion of protein.
*Protein Bars like Luna bars. We swear, some brands have bars that taste almost as good as candy. In some cases, they have as much calories and fat as a candy bar too, so look at the nutrition facts to see if your pick is a good choice.
Have a healthy and wonderful day!

Start spreading the news...
Becoming pregnant is such a wonderful experience and while you might want everyone to know that you are expecting as soon as your test reads positive , when to make "pregnancy announcement" is a surprisingly hotly debated topic. There are advantages to telling people early in the game as well as waiting until things are more certain. No time is the "right" time, but here are a few things to consider about sharing the news that you are " plus one (or more)":
*Many women believe that waiting until the second trimester to share the news is a good idea because most miscarriages occur within the first 20 weeks of gestation but closer to the first 13 weeks to be exact. The chances of miscarrying for women in peak childbearing years (under the age of 35) are 10-25% while women who are between 35-45 have a 20-35% change of miscarrying.
*An advantage of sharing the news early is that you will get lots of support (emotionally and physically) early in the pregnancy regardless of the outcome.
* Becoming pregnant is a huge life change, so some people like to digest the experience first before letting everyone know.
*A disadvantage to telling only a few people is that good news travels fast and if a friend/family member finds out from a secondary source he/she might be offended. If this is the case, no need to feel bad. Sharing your news is your business and you should feel free to share it with whomever, you want whenever you want. Regardless, if you do not want to offend your friend, tell them that you wanted to make the announcement personal and you were waiting for the right time to tell them.
*An advantage to waiting until you make an announcement is that you could build up the excitement and you could have time prepare a family function or a creative way of sharing the news with family/friends.
Whether you share your news early or later in your pregnancy, remember that no matter what, it is exciting and up to YOU to make the decision. No time is the best time, it is a personal decision.
Have a wonderful Monday!

TGIF!!
Happy Friday! Yay! So, in honor of Oprah, who is leaving her syndicated show after 25 years of magic, we selected some good reads for those who are expecting and post partum. Some will make you laugh, while others will give you some advice on how to prepare for baby. Here are some picks to check out if you are are heading to the beach in the next few weeks:
*A humorous read for sleep deprived parents, "Go the F**k to Sleep" is a sensation. Written by Adam Mansbach, this book is cheeky and might just be the thing you need to make your rise and shine without those 8 hours.
*The "What to Expect When You're Expecting" series by Heidi Murkoff. These books are virtually a bible of expectant moms and will take you through the years up until your baby becomes a toddler.
*The Modern Girl's Guide to Motherhood" by Jane Buckingham is a great read for a young, hip mom who wants to make a smooth transition into motherhood.
*"Bump it UP" by Amy Tara Koch is a style expert who teaches moms how to take the frump out of maternity.
*"The Mother of All Pregnancy Books" by Ann Douglas offers wonderful insight to parents who already have kiddies.
*"Green Babies, Sage Moms" written by Lynda Fassa gives good green advice for moms who want to "raise an organic baby".
Have you read any of these? Let us know if you liked them!
Enjoy your weekend!!

We love all of our readers, but we have to admit that there are a lot of mommy blogs out there that are a wonderful source of information for expectant and post-partum moms. Through the years, we have been fortunate to have partnerships with so many wonderful blogs but here are some blogs that you should consider "bookmarking" because they are on the front lines of all things mommy related:
*Good for Gossip: it's a toss up between People's Celebrity Baby Blog and Celebrity Baby Scoop..Access Hollywood's Blog is also another great source of Hollywood news and finally the Huffington Post.
*For great fashion tips for expectant moms- we love stylist Amy Tara Kock's blog as well as Lil Sugar; sheknows.com is also a good bet.
*Great baby shower ideas- www.hostesswiththemostess.com- SO inspiring. Great menu ideas as well!
*Health information: Babble.com ; www.babycenter.com; webmdbaby.com
*other wonderful sites to check out www.babygadget.com; www.babyzone.com; www.coolmompicks.com; www.momfinds.com; www.dr.sears.com, www.parentdish.com and www.the bump.com

Wear it Wednesday!
Has Mimi (Mariah Carey) started a trend? Expectant women worldwide are starting to decorate their bellies with belly art. Silly and fun, some people find it enjoyable to decorate their bellies with their favorite sports team emblem, in honor of a holiday or even as a surprise for a baby shower. Belly decorating can be a fun activity to do with your kids to get them excited for the new family member or you can do it with other expectant friends. All you need is some face paints that are gentle on skin and won't stain.
It is best to test the paint on a section of your belly before rubbing the paint all over just in case you have an allergic reaction. Make sure that you have some good cold cream or make up remover in the house in case you want to remove your designs.
What do you think of belly art? A do or a don't? Let us know! In the mean time, here are some ideas trying this "art project":
*pumpkin for Halloween
*fishbowl
*crystal ball
*An image of inside the womb
*a butterfly
*donut with sprinkles
*sun
*rainbow
*beachball, basketball, baseball, soccer ball, tennis ball, football

Tips Tuesday!
Yum! Having some cravings lately that can't seem to be satiated? We have for healthy alternatives to some typically "no-no" foods:
*Been craving chocolate mousse? We just tried the Jello- Mousse Temptations and let us tell you...they are pretty tempting! Sugar free and 60 calories. Top with some low-fat whipped cream and you have a low calorie scrumptious treat! Best news is you don't have to feel guilty for having 2 or 3 servings!
*Craving salty? We really love Pop Chips. These light an puffy treats come in 100 calorie packs and might not have the same texture as a potato chip but they do pack in all that salty flavor you might be craving. These chips also come in a ton of flavors like barbeque and sour cream and onion. Also delicious? We love anything from Pirate brands. If you miss Cheetos or Cheese Puffs, these are a great close second and for half the calories!
* Ice Scream You Scream....have you been having some ice cream cravings? Well, Skinny Cow makes some delicious and low calorie alternatives that will make you nix your cravings in the bud. However, if you are having some aversions to
dairy, make your own creamy, delicious ice cream with just one ingredient- bananas! If you freeze a banana until solid, then whiz it up in a blender or food processor, it gets creamy and a little gooey just like a good custard ice cream. (Recipe taken from www.thekitchn.com)
Try these delicious treats and let us know what you think!
Have a yummy day!

Fun things for expecting mamas!
Happy Monday! We hope that you enjoyed the weekend!
Being pregnant means getting to enjoy fun products such as cute graphic tees (such as our "It's a boy/girl" tees available on www.moodymamas.com). While some of the products out there are a little cheesy, some are pure gold. We are always looking for fun presents that will give an expectant mom a laugh and lighten her mood . Here are some of our favorites for that mom-to-be who has a great sense of humor:
*Don't pregnant ladies love all things pickle? Probably not so much, but if your pregnant friend seems to really be enjoying pickles during her pregnancy, give her some pickle lip balm. Silly and ridiculous, but it will be sure to make her smile. (see above).
*
Nothing says "prepared" like the "Dirty Diaper Survival Kit". Perfect to give to a mom or dad-to be, this kit comes with all the tools necessary to tackle diaper duty!
* Is your friend worried about losing her beauty sleep once the baby arrives? Get her some "ear plugs" to ensure her some rest!
* Are you going to a co-ed baby shower? Get the daddy-to-be all the tools necessary to handle diaper duty with confidence via the "Diaper duty belt"
* We know that 8 year olds might be too young to receive botox, but what age is appropriate for getting a tattoo? We think that these "baby tattoos" make a hilarious gag gift!
Have a great day!

TGIF!!
Yay for Friday! Love the weekends...also love that we are in spring mode and about to get our summer on. Best thing about summer? Warm weather and sunny days. Worst thing about summer? Having to put that bathing suit on for the first time. Never fun. Are you nervous about sporting a suit when you are pregnant or post partum. We totally get it. Thankfully, there are some bathing suits that are cute enough to trick you into feeling confident on the beach. Though we have yet to design beachwear, we have our eyes are some cute suits styles that you should consider if you are planning to sport one this summer:
*The Tankini- Some maternity brands offer tankini's that are both stylish and functional. We have even seen some on the market that offer easy nursing access. Don't look for muu-muu replicas because you will look bigger than you are. Show off those curves!
*If you are loving your pregnant body right now, no need to cover up! Lots of celebs wear bikinis while they are pregnant and you can too! Your belly is a beautiful thing, so if you are feeling confident enough to bare some skin, we encourage you to do so.
* For those who are post-partum and wanting to cover up until you get back to your pre-pregnancy figure, this is the season for the one piece. There are amazing options out there that make teeny bikini's look like old news. We are loving looks that have rouching in the belly area to make the stomach appear slimmer.
*Grab a great cover up. If you are not feeling bathing suit ready, find a gorgeous featherweight tunic or a sleeveless linen beach dress and look great poolside without donning a suit.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Wear it Wednesday!
Happy Wednesday! Congrats on making it to mid-week. While we generally focus on "what to wear", this week, we want to share some tips on "what not to wear" this spring. So many trends, so little time...why waste your time on trends that will not look good on you. As we mentioned, bright colors and boho chic looks are all the rage this season and they look fabulous on the pregnant bod. However, there are a few looks that you my want to think about keeping out of the closet while you are pregnant...
* High waisted jeans. These pants look great on some women, but when you have a baby on board, this style of pant will most likely not fit over your belly, let alone flatter you. Jeans are one of those things that you should really buy maternity if you want to look your best because they are cut to sit comfortably around the belly.
* The jumpsuit. Here is another look that will not fit comfortably around your burgeoning belly. Go ahead and try this style post-partum, just perhaps re-think it for this season.
* We love a heel on special certain occasions, when you will most likely be sitting for the duration of the event. However, for everyday? We do not recommend wearing the sky-high platforms that are everywhere right now. They are super cute, but we bet they hurt women's feet when they are not swollen and carrying extra weight. Love this look, try to find shoes that mimic the look with less of a wedge or a heel.
What looks are you loving this season that seem inappropriate for the pregnant ladies? Let us know! Perhaps there are ways to wear these styles by being inventive!
Have a great day!

Tips Tuesday!
To have or not to have, that is the question...
When you are on baby #2,3,4 or more is it appropriate to have a baby shower? If last time you had a baby boy and you are now expecting a baby girl, it's not like you can recycle ALL of your baby clothes...so what to do? We are sure that your baby stash could use a little updating but if you feel like having a baby "shower" is in bad taste, here's a new cute idea: ask for a "sprinkle". A "sprinkle" is when you ask your friends and family to add a few necessary objects instead of being "showered" with gifts. Here are a few cute ideas for a throwing a "sprinkle":
* Feel free to celebrate. Just because you are having more children, does not mean that each baby is not worthy of a celebration. If you want to go all out, go festive with your decorations and even follow a theme. However, if you want to be low key consider doing a generic theme instead of going "blue or pink".
*Need a verse to be written on your invitation, explaining what a "sprinkle" is, make a brief statement describing what will occur to familiarize those who do not know what this term means.
* Most likely, your big ticket items have already been purchased so it might not be necessary to register for items this time.
* Just because this is not a traditional "baby shower", you can still have fun with your guests! Celebrate by playing fun games and activities like a spa day.
Have you ever had a baby "sprinkle"? Share your thoughts on what made the day special with us!
Enjoy your day!!

Happy Mother's Day Weekend!!
Hello loveley ladies! We hope that you are getting ready for your breakfast in bed and day of celebration!! You deserve it for all of the wonderful hard work that you do. Whether you are an expectant mom or if you are already a mother, remember the beauty that you have granted this world by giving birth. Not always easy and not always enjoyable, but being a mom is a gift and we hope that you are treasuring it. A bond between a mother and a child is dependent on emotional and physical bonding, but it is possible to bond with your baby when it is in the gestational period. Here are some of our favorite mother/child bonding tips:
*Eye to eye contact as well as skin to skin contact during the first few weeks of life is a great way to introduce yourself to your baby. If you are not medically capable of doing this, no problem! This is only the beginning, there is plenty of time to catch up!
*Sleeping in the same room as the baby for the first few months (on separate sleeping forms). This allows for nighttime bonding as well as easy feedings.
* Talk and sing to your baby when it is in the womb so it begins to hear your voice
* Make funny faces. Babies love watching facial movements, so you might start to see some cute facial expressions!
*Read nursery rhymes. This is not about making your 6 month old learn how to read, it is about bonding. Spending quality time with the baby is an integral part of creating a sense of connection with your baby. Reading, singing, taking the baby out for walks are all wonderful ways of establishing the bond as mother and child.
Have a wonderful, fabulous weekend!!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!!!
We at Moody Mamas love all things fun and festive...so of course, we encourage your to celebrate Cinco de Mayo (May 5th). While it is a celebration for Mexico's independence in recent years Americans everywhere have started celebrating this day by eating delish regional foods and of course drinking Margaritas! While you may not be able to enjoy alcoholic Margaritas, we encourage you to have this beverage "virgin" and you won't miss anything but that tipsy feeling!
Come together with your friends and family by throwing an impromptu Mexican dinner party. Serve little tacos with queso and chips. Put on some tejano or mariachi music and fiesta! Enjoying foods and traditions from a variety of cultures is a wonderful way to spice up your life. Here are some other fun ways to celebrate this holiday:
* Look out for local parades
* Go to your favorite Mexican restaurant, they will be sure to have some specials and will most likely be festive
*Take out the movie Machete or an old Marlon Brando flick entitled Viva Zapata! to learn more about the journey for Mexican independence
* Learn how to make a new mexican dish that you have not tried before
*Take a dance class that teaches you the traditional dances of Mexico.
Have a wonderful Cinco de Mayo!

Tips Tuesday!
Breakfast in bed is a wonderful way to celebrate Mother's Day but want to make this year's Mother's Day even more special for your mom or a special mom in your life? Here are some fun tips to make the day a little extraordinary:)
* Create a "Memory Jar". If you are a first time mom, your mother will really appreciate a jar filled with all your favorite memories that you have shared with her. Also fun to share- special things that your mom did for you that you plan on doing for your child. Put these thoughtful ideas on slips of paper and present them in a pretty Mason Jar or a fun decorative jar.
* Name a star after your mom...after all, growing up she most likely was the "celebrity" that you coveted.
*Did you make friends with some ladies in a lamaze class or prenatal group? If they just recently gave birth, put together a basket with some yummy treats or a collection full of menus with a gift certificate to your favorite restaurant that delivers. Still an expectant mom? Send her some flowers, after all, this is technically her first Mother's Day.
* Offer your mom a "girl's night". Sure, she will always be your mom but as your get older it is nice to transition to friendship as well. Make your mom feel special by inviting her over for a movie marathon or try a new restaurant out together. Sharing in bonding activities are ways to strengthen your relationship and will make your mom feel special.
* Your mom is sweet and deserves some sweets. Treat your mom to a fun day of trying your city's best confections. Do a little research on sites like yelp.com and create an agenda like going on a "cupcake crawl", "chocolate tour" or an "ice cream lover's journey" and trek to the best spots for these delicious treats.
Have a wonderful day!

Happy Mom's Week!!
We hope that everyone enjoyed their weekend! Today marks the start of what we think should be called "Mother's week" because one day's worth of celebration is just not enough. For the week leading up to Mother's Day (which is this Sunday), we will honor mothers and expectant mothers with stories and ideas that celebrate motherhood. Being a mom has its perks and its frustrations, but all in all we think that most women would agree that motherhood is wonderful. Here are some of our favorite quotes about being a mom:
* "Motherhood: All love begins and ends there."
-- Robert Browning *"Being a full-time mother is one of the highest salaried jobs ... since the payment is pure love."
-- Mildred B. Vermont
*"If I had a flower for each time I thought of My Mother, I could walk in my garden forever."
-- Unknown *"A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts."
-- Washington Irving (1783-1859)
-- Washington Irving (1783-1859)
*"A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path."
-- Agatha Christie
-- Agatha Christie
*"If at first you don't succeed, do it the way your mother told you to." - Anonymous
Have a wonderful day!
