Mom-erican Idol
So, it's no spoiler to mention that Lee DeWyze won this year's American Idol competition--also no secret that he's very talented--but a particular piece of our heart was rooting for Crystal "Mama Sox" Bowersox. She's pretty much the epitome of awesome motherhood!
To celebrate rockin' moms everywhere, here's Crystal's version of the Janis Joplin classic, "Piece of My Heart."

And for fun, here's an awesome article on the "superpowers" babies possess. Did you know babies can read minds (...basically)? And that they have super hearing (...to pick out their mom's voices)? Babies are amazing!

These Baby Names Are Terry Bull.
One of the coolest things about being pregnant is thinking about what to name your baby. Those of us born with boring names secretly fantasize about giving our kids a kooky moniker, but this article documents some real stinkers. Zombie? Thor Hammer? Tu Morrow? REALLY?
What's the weirdest thing you'd ever consider naming your child? Or, on the flipside, what's the worst baby name you can think up?

This Video is AMAZING!
For all of you Mr. Wizard, Bill Nye the Science Guy moms-to-be out there, this is an unbelievable video! We have kind of adopted the seahorse as our unofficial blog mascot (we've posted about them before because they're one of few animals where the male of the species carries the babies) and this is an incredible video of a male seahorse giving birth. Happy Friday, everyone!

Science Proves It -- Moms Make Everything Better.
Just as we always suspected...the sound of a mom's voice alone makes everything better.
A study just out (click here for the link!) proves that hearing her mother's voice is just as soothing as an actual hug and kiss from a child's mommy dearest. We always knew our moms had magical powers, but it's pretty great that science has finally caught up.

Maternity Book Club: Belly Laughs!
Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy is not your mom's pregnancy book. Unless your mom was rad. (And you're five years old, but that's besides the point.) Anyway, if you're only going to read one book about being pregnant, we say pick the one with chapters like:
-Is That an Apple on Your Rectum, Or Are You Just Happy to See Me?(Hemorrhoids)
-http://www.ihavetostopbuyingbabyshit.com (On-Line Baby Stores)
-Poopin' on the Table (The Dark Side of Delivery)
-What the Fu*k Are These? (Stretch Marks)
At least we've got the cure for the chapter entitled "Where in the Hell Can I Find a Muumuu? (Nothing to Wear)." Our line is still going strong at Target!

Dream a Little Dream of...Cabbage?
One of the most interesting symptoms of pregnancy is a reported increase in the number of vivid dreams per night. It's fun to retelling a bizarre dream to the people guest-starring in it, but it's even better to look up the symbolism in one of those old school dream dictionaries to see what it all might mean. This dictionary kind of walks the line between Freudian psychology (a cabinet symbolizes the female body) and total old wives' tales (cabbage means you shouldn't waste time on petty things...?) but that's the way we like our pseudoscience.
Click on over to analyze your dreams! Have a particularly vivid one you'd like to share? Leave it in the comments!

Babies, the movie!
Have you heard about the documentary Babies? We can't wait to see it. This review explains the movie like this:
Check out the trailer here, and go see it in theaters! Each child is from a different culture: Ponijao is a little girl born into the Himba tribe in Namibia; Bayarjargal lives a nomadic life with his herder parents in Mongolia; Mari resides with her Japanese family in the high-rise heart of Tokyo; and Hattie dwells in hip San Francisco. As the film follows them concurrently, we see each one reach the common milestones of infancy — sitting up, crawling, eating solid foods, walking — while they discover the unique features of the place they have been born into. The result is an eloquent illustration of how all human beings are fundamentally the same, yet how our physical and cultural environment shapes us from the moment we emerge from the womb.

Pregnancy -- It Ain't Just For the Ladies...
"The male seahorse then fertilizes the eggs with his own sperm, thus initiating a three-week pregnancy that is marked by an inability to move around and search for food. After 3 days of labor, the male seahorse will give birth to 200 baby seahorses. "
If there are are any mamas-to-be out there mulling the inequities of male/female birth responsibilities, you may be heartened to know that in the animal kingdom, a handful of males do the baby-carrying. Nine months of pregnancy can seem like an eternity, but imagine three days of labor and 200 kids at the end of it!
Click on over to this awesome Mr. Wizard-style science post at WebEcoist to see some other male animals that carry their babies (including the Leafy Sea Dragon...possibly one of the coolest creaures on the planet).
